Boston College unveils bandana print numbers and uniforms that honor Welles Crowther. Welles saved at least 18 people on September 11, 2001 and was recognized by a red bandana he always wore.
Never Forget
On September 11, we remember heroes. This year, with all the well deserved tributes being shared, I came across a story of heroism I hadn’t heard before. It’s the story of Welles Crowther, a 24-year old hero and former Boston College Lacrosse Player, who kept a red bandana gifted by his father with him at all times.
It wasn’t until Memorial Day in 2002, when his mother read a New York Times article, that his family learned of his heroism. The article spoke about a man wearing a red bandana who had helped people in the South Tower. Eventually the pieces of his story were put together. Welles is credited with saving as many as 18 people.
Everyday Hero
At the time of his death, Welles was an equity trader who worked in the South Tower. After helping others down, he was last seen heading back up the stairs with a group of firefighters to help more people, when the South Tower collapsed. Boston College has honored Welles for many years with the bandana print and this year’s uniforms are an exceptional tribute and reminder of his heroism.
