Breaking New Ground

I just heard on the radio that U2 is going to be broadcasting an entire concert live on YouTube this coming Sunday. It is supposedly a YouTube first and I’m sure it will be a huge success.  I will most likely be sleeping soundly when it airs, but I’m sure it will have a huge audience around the world.

Not many of us have that kind of marketing clout, but there are still opportunities for you to break new ground if you just stop and think about it. Being the first to offer a particular service (like reflective or metallic lettering) or product (like reuseable, custom printed shopping bags) in your area is almost always a good thing…even if the product itself bombs, you can still benefit from the publicity.  Before I started working in the family business, I owned retail jewelery stores and was always looking for ways to get people into the store.  One time I put footprint stickers on the sidewalk outside the store that led people to the door.  I also had several promotions that had something to do with a disco ball and astrology signs but don’t quite remember the details. It was the 70’s after all. All I’m saying is, you don’t need to be U2 to have a successful, ground-breaking marketing idea. Just a little creativity. And don’t forget to shout it from the rooftops, or at least put a sign in the window!
