Great Race Day 8: Alpena to Sault Ste. Marie

Trevor and Josh with Wayne Carini of Chasing Classic Cars.

Happy Canada Day to all our Canadian friends. We are looking forward to seeing the fireworks from across the river in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan this evening. Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced SOO-SAINT-MARIE) is the northern most point on the Dixie Highway this Great Race will travel. We stopped here as part of the Great Race in 2012 and are glad to be back there this evening for the overnight. We also had a warm welcome and great lunch stop in Alpena. Located on the shores of Lake Huron, Alpena is Michigan pure. It’s a port that is now home to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, which protects more than 116 historically significant shipwrecks. It’s a popular scuba diving spot, since all the wrecks have been protected since the 80’s. But most people use glass bottom boat tours to see the visible wrecks. We didn’t have time for diving or boating, we had to press on to Sault Ste. Marie, crossing the famous Mackinaw Bridge, which is always an adventure. You can see some live video of the Spirit of Stahls cars driving over the bridge on the Spirit of Stahls FB page.

Crossing the Mackinac bridge is always an adventure, there were strong winds today.

Another classic car t-shirt for our photo collection.

Leaving Frankenmuth this morning the racers had the opportunity to traverse another covered bridge.

There are seven teams from Japan competing in the Great Race this year. This is one of them entering Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
