On Monday, June 25, we arrived in the hometown of the Great Race’s title sponsor Hemmings Motor News . It is the Great Race’s third time to have a stop in Bennington, Vermont in the last eight years, but this is the first lunch stop in Hemmings’ museum. In addition to be able to see the nice collection of cars in the museum, we were also able to visit the offices of HMN on a work day while everyone is busy getting out the next issue. I was in charge of a college newspaper back at Wayne State and seeing everyone hard at work brought back a lot of memories. After lunch, we enjoyed blue skies and breathtaking New England views and architecture on the way to the overnight stop in Burlington. This evening, the Church Street Marketplace, a pedestrian area in the middle of beautiful downtown Burlington, was the place to be. Thanks to everyone who came out to see all the racers and cars. This fantastic outdoor mall is located right between the University of Vermont and Lake Champlain. Mary and I had extra reason to celebrate because we received our first “ace” along the route today, as did several other Spirit of Stahls’ teams. This means we completed a leg of the rally with zero time deductions. Tomorrow, we stop in Mt. Washington, New Hampshire for lunch and then on to Gardiner, Maine. We are really enjoying the scenery so far and it will probably only get better.
